At Rattar House, we blend history with comfort to provide a unique self-catering accommodation experience.
The house has been architecturally designed and lovingly renovated to protect and conserve its heritage with all the luxuries of the 21st Centuary.
The ground floor is beautfully light and bright with a cathedral ceiling entrance hallway with hand crafted sweeping staircase. Off the hall you will find a cosy Library with views over the Pentland Firth and beyond to Orkney.
Opposite the Library is the fabulous Kitchen with enormous picture window looking out to the garden. There is seating at a bespoke island unit and a large dining table for sumptious dinners.
The kitchen leads onto the spacious Garden room with comfy sofas, a woodburning stove, luxurious soft furnishings and so much light. It's our favourite spot in the house and a wonderful space to enjoy each others company.
Leading off the central hallway there is also a practical boot room, shower room and laundry.
Our seperate laundry room has everything you need to keep on top of the chores including washing machine, tumble dryer, hoover, mop and cleaning equipment.
Rattar House is located in the county of Caithness just on the edge of Skarfskerry, the most northerly village in mainland Britain. With vast open landscapes, dramatic coastline, racous sea birds , archeology, history and a wealth of things to see and do, there is something for all the family to enjoy. Below are just a few highlights very close to Rattar House to explore but there is much more to see and do. Come and stay and find out for yourself!
3 miles east from Rattar House is The Castle of Mey. Famously owned by the Queen Mother, and now part of The Kings Foundation.
Castle guides, many of whom met the Queen Mother on her annual visits are full of stories about the Queen Mother and will give you a very warm welcome.
King Charles II continues to use the castle and visits each summer to enjoy the tranquility that the remote north coast provides.
As well as the historic castle, there is a beautiful walled garden to explore, an animal centre which the kids will love and a gift shop with faboulous cafe.
3 miles west of Rattar House is Dunnet Bay. A sheltered sandy bay that stretches over 2 miles backed by rolling sand dunes. Perfect for family walks, swimming, sunbathing, beach sports and picnics. The bay also has some of the best waves in Europe for surfing and is used by North Coast Watersports to teach surfing and paddleboarding - go on, give it a go!
Behind the bay is Dunnet community forest, a fabulous place to explore any time of year.
A 5 mile drive past picturesque Ham Harbour and the quant village of Brough, you will reach the most northerly point on mainland Britain, Dunnet Head. Dunnet Head is a vast nature reserve with stunning sea cliffs and coastal grasslands.
A single track road leads you through the rugged landscape up to the lighthouse and viewing point. Look out for puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes on the cliffs edge. In the sea you can often spot dolphins playing and Orca sightings are common.
Dunnet Bay Distillery located in the nearby village of Dunnet is a multi award winning distillery set up by locals Claire & Martin Murray.
Well known for Rock Rose Gin and Holy Grass Vodka, the 5-star Visit Scotland visitor centre is well worth a trip. There is a distillery shop to stock up on your favourite tipple. They also offer regular tours and often have events such as botanical art workshops and cocktail making.
10 miles east along the northern coastline is John o' Groats, a popular tourist stop as the most distant point on the mainland from Land's End in Cornwall.
From here enjoy wildlife tours, coastal walks, shopping or just a coffee or an icecream.
A favourite walk near John O'Groats is to Duncansby Head so see the breathtaking sea stacks and spot the seabirds nesting on the cliffs. Puffins are annual visitors and there are great opporunities to spot dolphins and orca's
It's remarkably easy to get to Orkney from Rattar House. Gills Bay, just 7 miles from the house has regular ferries to St Margarets Hope and you can easily get there and back in a day and visit this breathtaking island.
Sailings take just over an hour and allow a wonderful opportunity to glimpse the islands of Stroma and Swona and spot seabirds, seals and even dolphins, orca's and pilot whales en-route.

If you love a tipple then you are spoilt for choice in Caithness. As well as our local distillery Dunnet Bay Distillers, there are several others to visit.
The oldest in the county is Old Pulteney in Wick. Founded in 1826, at the time, it was the most northerly distillery on mainland Britain and was only accessible by sea.
At John O'Groats, 8 Doors Distillery is newly opened distillery and has already won Tourism Destination of the Year at the Scottish Whisky Awards 2023.
Worth watching is the future of Castletown Mill which is located at the end of Dunnet Bay. The mill is being renovated by the Murray family, founders of Dunnet Bay Distillers and is soon to become a whisky distillery and visitor centre. Follow Stannergill Whisky
And if you've still not had enough to drink then visit North Point Distillery in Forss and Wolfburn Distillery, Thurso.
