Rattar House

Experience Unmatched Luxury

Indulge in History and Comfort

Rattar House was lovingly restored in 2023 after lying empty for 30 years and is now a holiday home for Murray, Elisabeth and their daughter Isabella Mackay who live and work in Cambridgeshire.  Murray grew up at Rattar and has very fond memories of his time spent playing in the gardens and house when it was occupied by his Grandparents.  Murray’s parents farm Rattar Mains Farm which surrounds the house so guests will be immersed in the smells and sounds of farming life during a holiday at Rattar.

The 580 acre livestock farm runs along the North coast of mainland Britain.  With beautiful views across the Pentland Firth over to Orkney and nestled just beside Dunnet Head, Rattar Mains is one of the most northerly farms in mainland Britain.

The Mackay family run 115 breeding cows who calve from April to June each year. The cows calve indoors so they can be nurtured and sheltered from the spring weather and then go out to the lush grass to thrive.  If you’re lucky to stay at Rattar in the spring, you’ll get to see the new born calves running around in the fields surrounding the house.  Also look out for the handsome Aberdeen Angus bulls; they work hard to sire the next generation of the Rattar herd.

As well as many acres of grassland, the farm grows spring barley.  This is used to feed the cattle throughout winter and supply them with comfy bedding.

There is also a lot of history at Rattar.  The house is category B listed as it was once the “seat of the Earls of Caithness” (1813) and in subsequent years became the property of “Traill of Rattar”  (1858).
